Getting Started

Everything you need before your first case: hardware requirements, setup, and how to install Locarda on your iPad.

iPad Requirements

Locarda is designed exclusively for iPad. It takes full advantage of the larger screen for body diagram annotation, side-by-side dictation, and PDF workspace features.

Recommended: iPad Pro (11-inch or 12.9-inch) or iPad Air for the best experience. The larger screen makes annotating body diagrams and reviewing sections much easier.

The following iPad models are supported:

  • iPad Pro (any generation): best experience
  • iPad Air (4th generation or later)
  • iPad (9th generation or later)
  • iPad mini (6th generation or later): functional but the smaller screen is not ideal for diagram work

Apple Pencil

An Apple Pencil is required for annotating body diagrams. Locarda uses the Pencil for drawing on diagram pages, marking findings, and adding handwritten notes.

Compatible Apple Pencil models:

  • Apple Pencil (2nd generation): magnetically attaches and charges on iPad Pro and iPad Air
  • Apple Pencil (1st generation): works with standard iPad models
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C): works with newer iPad models

Important: Make sure your Apple Pencil is paired and charged before starting a case. You can check the battery level in the iPad's Batteries widget.

iOS Requirements

Locarda requires iPadOS 17.0 or later. We recommend always running the latest version of iPadOS for the best performance and security.

To check your iPadOS version:

1

Open Settings

Tap the Settings app on your iPad home screen.

2

Go to General > About

Tap General, then tap About. Your iPadOS version is listed next to "iPadOS Version."

3

Update if needed

If you're on an older version, go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts to update.

Microphone Tips

Locarda uses your voice to generate formatted autopsy report sections. Good audio quality makes a big difference in transcription accuracy.

Built-in iPad Microphone

The iPad's built-in microphone works well in a quiet environment. Hold the iPad within arm's reach and speak at a normal volume.

External Microphone (Recommended)

For best results, especially in noisy environments like a morgue, use an external microphone:

  • AirPods or AirPods Pro: convenient and already paired with your iPad
  • Bluetooth lapel mic: clips to your gown and stays close to your mouth
  • USB-C microphone: plug directly into your iPad for studio-quality audio

Pro tip: AirPods Pro with active noise cancellation provide excellent audio quality even in loud environments. Many of our users prefer them for hands-free dictation.
